Dymo 5 Series Printers
Models 550 & 5XL

Our View:
The new Dymo 5 series printers, which includes the Model 550, and 5XL, have a special label restriction implemented with an imbedded RFID chip in the label roll core. This prevents the use of not only compatible labels, but even Dymo's own brand name regular labels from working in these printers. Plus the new special “5xx” labels are only available from Dymo at higher cost and only in a few sizes. Longtime Dymo users are up in arms about this. Stores and online sellers are having many printers returned almost as fast as they were sold, plus bad press about them is spreading.
Dymo has shot itself in the foot, as there are other printers that will use the regular Dymo style labels with proper setup. Was hoping Dymo would figure out their blunder by now and just turn off the special restriction so both new and legacy labels can be used. Besides, someone will eventually clone the chip, just like they did with inkjet cartridges, but in the end the labels will be more expensive.
If you need printers, buy up what Dymo 4xx series you can find. Note that any of the Xytek compatible Dymo labels will work in other printers like the Zebra and many other less expensive Zebra compatible brands, as long as the printing application supports non-Dymo printers as most currently do.
Other Printers:
While all Xytek labels compatible with Dymo/Zebra printers will work in Zebra compatible printers, you will not be able to use the Dymo Label Software or any application software that specifically detects and requires a Dymo printer (although a workaround may be available). Otherwise, most any PDF or compatible print file formatted for the correct label size will output correctly once the printer properties/preferences are properly set up.
NetStamps Users:
Xytek compatible NetStamps 30915 labels will also not work in the 5xx series printers, but will work and is currently supported for printing using a Zebra compatible printer and of course any of the 4xx Dymo printers.
